Transform your Procrastination into Progress

I have a theory, I believe that there are golden clues hidden in our procrastinated projects.  Someday, when my kids are grown, I will launch a blog.  Someday, when I have more time, I’ll start a business, learn photography, or _____ (fill in the blank with something you long to do)...

The basic reason is, we are experiencing resistance to that which we really crave because of one thing…  FEAR.  Yes, it is that simple.  If your soul longs to do something deep down and you have not yet taken action, you are most likely experiencing some kind of fear that you’d rather avoid feeling.

Please don’t beat yourself up about this, it is absolutely human nature and brain science.  Our brains are wired to keep us safe in our cubicles and day jobs and things that feel secure. I’ve absolutely been there and work on moving through these feelings on the daily.  It is a practice.  However, I have also faced my mortality (as a cancer survivor) just enough to realize deeply that you only get one life.

There are so many strategies you can apply to overcome procrastination.  What you cannot do is turn back the clock to get the years back that you spent putting this off.  Why not start small and start now?

Here are some tips to get started:

  • Break the project down into 15-minute tasks and spend your first 15 minutes every day taking micro-actions toward this goal

  • Have someone hold you accountable, you are 65% more likely to do it if you tell someone else you will

  • Learn from someone who has already done it.  Reach out to someone that you admire who is further along on their journey than you.  Ask them for 15 minutes.  Do an informational interview to understand their advice on getting started and then take action.
