Unstoppable Consistency
A question I get asked a lot is, “how do I show up consistently to my highest leverage actions? I always fall off my game and beat myself up”. First off, stop telling yourself this story. If your narrative is that you are never consistent, guess what is most likely to happen? Yep - inconsistency.
Start with acknowledging that you are human. You will have good days and bad days. Set up some structure and simplicity so that it is hard to “fall off”. Then, if and when you do, give yourself some grace, don’t layer on the guilt and simply keep practicing.
What does this look like?
Keep it simple - start very small. Even 15 minutes a day on one small chunk of a project daily makes a huge difference. Momentum builds when you repeatedly take action, one baby step at a time.
Create a structure for accountability - create a recurring meeting with yourself on the calendar (preferably in the morning before the day gets away from you) to take this small action daily. Tell a coworker, friend or mentor to hold you accountable. This can be as simple as a quick text that you’re done each day. Do this until it becomes second nature. You can return the favor and hold them accountable to their actions.
Manage your emotions - when it feels confusing, hard, uncomfortable or even scary, allow those emotions to be there with you. Don’t push them away and busy yourself with something easier or more enjoyable to avoid the feeling. Let the feeling come up, feel the fear, doubt, anxiety, or whatever emotion is present. Breath into it and remind yourself, it is just 15 minutes. Remember that emotions are temporary and that it will pass. Take action alongside this emotion. Think of it as a practice, this does get less uncomfortable with time.
Implement these three things and keep showing up. The bottom line is best said with this quote: “you can’t fail if you never quit”.
