How to Know Which "Someday When..." Project to Execute On

In the last two weeks, I’ve heard numerous business owners say “Wow, I actually have a ton of these “Someday When” projects that you talk about”.  The next question is always,  “How do I know which one to focus on?” Here are some ways to work through this important question:

  • Which one scares you the most?  Think scary in an exciting kind of way.  Typically, this is the one to go after.  Feelings of resistance will immediately pop up when you think about starting to implement.  Thoughts like, “Who am I to do that? What if I fail?  I wouldn’t even know where to start…”  I’m saying, THAT is the one to tackle!  When you feel resistance coming up, it's likely a signal that you are heading in the right direction.

  • Which project, once fully implemented, will make the most positive impact on your life?  Maybe it's a lifestyle improvement, a shift in where you are spending your time or an innovative new line of business you want to pursue.  Perhaps it will free you up energetically to focus your creative energy on one of your passions.  This is another key indicator of what to pursue.

  • Lastly, why do you have to pick one?  I’m all about simplicity, keeping things easy and taking baby steps in the right direction.  Oftentimes that means choosing one thing and focusing solely on that.  Other times, the answer lies in moving towards multiple projects at the same time and following the energy.  Ask yourself, what is your ideal future state when all of these are implemented in your life?  When you project yourself forward into that vision, how do you want to FEEL?  Really visualize this.  What do you spend your time doing, in what setting, who is around you and most importantly, what feelings does it evoke? What steps can you take now to step toward that future you?  It may or may not be one or all of the many “someday when” projects but the important part is that you are becoming the you that you want to be.  This is where the magic lives!

Continue to revisit this work. I encourage you to look at your list of, “someday when” projects often.  Perhaps you are moving towards various projects at one time.  Pretty soon, one is going to emerge as the front-runner.  The only person who knows the answer to this question is you.  There are clues in the whispers that are coming from within you when you get quiet.  Pay attention to these nudges that you receive and take inspired action.
